By Surprise - Music Review

Andy Argyrakis : Music Reviewer

Artist:   Joy Williams
Label:   Reunion Records

Instead of continuing down a path of sugary sweet teen pop, Joy Williams adds a splash of rock to her contemporary sound along the lines of many other young female artists like Katy Hudson, Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne.  It’s just unfortunate Williams’ crystalline vocals are weighed down with an overly sterile studio sound and calculated musicianship in the process.

Tracks like the lackluster pop ditty “I Wonder,” the bouncy guitar jangle of “Everyday” and the forced Santana leanings on the title cut fail to demonstrate anything overly intricate.  Only during the dramatic ballad “Every Moment” do Williams’ angelic vocals and the escalating orchestral crescendos form an incandescent alliance, but it’s not enough to make up for the nine other far less surprising moments.
