Colbie Caillat Remains Bubbly on All Of You

Christa Banister : TheFish.com Contributing Writer

Artist: Colbie Caillat

Title: All of You

Label: Universal Republic

Following in the footsteps of her two previous releases Coco and Breakthrough, singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat officially has a severe case of Jack Johnson syndrome on All of You.

For anyone reading who's not familiar with that particular ailment, it's basically when a low-key, beach-loving artist basically writes the same mid-tempo song over and over and over again and passes it off as something new.

While it's certainly commendable that Colbie has always managed to keep her act classy, especially when compared to her fellow Pop Tarts Katy Perry, Rhianna, Britney Spears and the like, it still would be downright phenomenal to see her branch out into some uncharted musical territory.

That's not saying she has to channel her inner Joan Jett or something as radical as that, but it would be great to hear that sweet voice of hers in another key. Or at least sounding more expressive when the mood demands it. What she's offered here, however, is virtually indistinguishable from her previous work.

If anything, Colbie is just as bubbly as she was when she started her career. Serving up yet another round of sweet, summery love songs, there's certainly nothing overtly offensive about the straight-from-a-diary musings on "I Do," "Before I Let Go" and "What if." But sadly, there's nothing all that interesting about them either.

In fact, the only real deviation from the norm on "Favorite Song" is downright jarring because it's the only real risk she took on All of You. But it takes more than a brief rap interlude from Common to show you're open to new things. And unfortunately, All of You is just more of the same, which is good for the fans who value consistency but bad for everyone else who's hoping for something fresh and unexpected.
