It's strange to think that some of the biggest icons in music today originated from rather humble beginnings, but as the old saying goes, "Everybody starts somewhere."

U2 was born in 1976 when a college student put out a notice asking if anyone wanted to make a band. Country music star, Carrie Underwood, was unknown before American Idol; while teen heartthrob Justine Bieber was only discovered after he won second place in a local music competition, and uploaded his performance to youtube. Heck, even Lady Gaga started out writing music for other pop stars.

At the moment, The Colourful (spelled with a U) probably doesn't generate the same kind of attention as these other big-name artists, but in many ways that's what makes this fledgling rock band so appealing. Their latest album, Hearts and Citadels, displays a great deal of potential, not to mention talent, in its ambient rock. If the pattern holds true, great things could be on the horizon for this grass-roots Indie band.

After opening to a cool mix of instrumental tunes, the album charges ahead with the fist-pumping anthem of "Moria" and continues onward without breaking stride. Strong vocals from singer Brian Fannin help lead the music, while impressive talent on guitar and violin create a smooth atmosphere for each track.

The combination makes songs like "I Can't Fly" and "You're Heart Sounds like Mine" catchy and hypnotic. Others, like "The Greatest Fall" take a mellower tone to offer poignant reflections on life. Finally, some of the slower works, such as "Outlast the Fireflies", croon in a manner reminiscent of Regina Spektor. It's easy to listen to, and has a nice feel that is sure to win over listeners.

The band is still finding its voice, so to speak. The album's final song, "We Will Never End", concludes with some dialogue between the band members. This is a pretty common practice for most bands, but when it follows a song as beautiful and well sung as "We Will Never End" it puts a sour note on the performance that simply can't be ignored.  Similarly, the techno finale of "Lets Start Over" may leave you wondering if your ipod just short-circuited.

Hearts and Citadels is a fresh album for music lovers looking for a new set of sounds to dive into. Whether you like ambient rock or are just looking for some new tunes, The Colourful is worth a try. After all, who knows where you may see this band next?
