Colorful sophomore endeavor …

If Article One erupted into the pop arena as a fledgling, then with this unyielding sophomore endeavor, they finally take flight. With the effective production of veteran Tedd T. (newsboys, Mute Math), the Piche brothers and drummer Dave De Smit have reinvented themselves.

Here, the string-based Canadian trio leaves behind rote pop anthems and trades them in for clever, edgier songs that offer layers of textures and instrumental moments.
 
The most original side of Article One’s musical offerings is the strong, creative violin talents of Nathan Piche, a rare find in most pop/rock. His talent is put to best use on “Never Too Late to Call,” where the lilting orchestral strings and solid vocals elevate it to excellence. On “Love You Tomorrow,” the threesome verges on a Coldplay-esque arrangement. The rousing “Without You (I’m Not Alright),” co-written by songstress Cindy Morgan, also stretches AO musically, with a bounding beat and some bright falsetto notes.

However, AO stumbles on songs “Dare to Believe” and “Searchlights,” where newfound creativity and lyrical imagery vanish, leaving cookie-cutter pop songs in its wake. Despite these two lapses, the album is a sound second compilation, full of enough new “colors and sounds” to satisfy fans.
